is spread by mosquitoes and is a rare cause of brain infections (encephalitis). It can infect horses, causing fever, behavioural changes, and other symptoms of encephalitis, and infection is often deadly for the horse. Only a few human cases are reported in the United States each year, most in eastern or Gulf Coast states. Approximately 30 per cent of people with eastern equine encephalitis die and many survivors have ongoing neurologic problems.
