the degree by which a pathogenic organism can cause disease in a host. Virulence is the measurement of pathogenicity—the ability of a pathogen to cause disease. Highly virulent pathogens are more likely to cause disease in a host. The virulence of a pathogen is often correlated with the so-called virulence factors that enables an organism to invade a host and cause disease.
