A decision analytical framework (DAF) in which the benefits of ecosystem services are assumed to be incalculable and should be preserved unless the costs of doing so rise to an intolerable level, thus shifting the burden of proof to those who would convert them. A restriction (taboo, prohibition, harvesting season) which limits the use of resources to levels that are thought to be safe, e.g., conservation of a sufficient area of habitat to ensure the continued provision of ecological functions and services, at the ecosystem level.
