Q Fever

A disease caused by bacteria of the species Coxiella burnetii. This bacterium naturally infects some animals, such as goats, sheep and cattle. These bacteria are found in the birth products (i.e. placenta, amniotic fluid), urine, faeces and milk of infected animals. People can get infected by breathing in dust that has been contaminated by infected animal faeces, urine, milk and birth products or by eating contaminated unpasteurized dairy products. Some people never get sick; those who do usually develop flu-like symptoms. In a small percentage of people, the infection can resurface years later. This more deadly form of Q fever can damage the heart, liver, brain and lungs. From US CDC
