Sound and rotting logs and stumps, and coarse roots in all stages of decay, generally greater than 3 inches in diameter, that provide habitat for plants, animals, and insects and a source of nutrients and structures for soil development. CWD also provides erosion control and links between habitats.; Any piece(s) of dead woody material, e.g., dead boles, limbs, and large root masses, on the ground in forest stands or in streams.
