A series of measures aimed at preventing the introduction and/or spread of harmful organisms in order to manage the risk to people, animals, plants and the environment. Biosecurity covers issues such as the introduction of plant pests, animal pests and diseases, and zoonoses, the introduction and release of genetically modified organisms and their products, and the introduction and management of invasive alien species and genotypes. The COVID-19 pandemic is a recent example of a threat that requires biosecurity policies and regulatory measures in all relevant sectors.
