Youth literacy rate (MSSD Indicator 4)

The Mediterranean average of literacy rate of young adults is 98% and above the world average (92%). Since 1990, the literacy rate of young adults has increased significantly in all of the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries and is satisfactory in most of the northern Mediterranean countries. People are considered as literate when they can read, write, and understand a short simple article concerning their daily life (Millennium Indicator n°8). This indicator is linked to the SDG Indicator 4.6.1: Proportion of population in a given age group achieving at least a fixed level of proficiency in functional (a) literacy and (b) numeracy skills, by sex.
