Freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources - Period 1968 - 2017 (MSSD indicator 12)

Water stress is constantly increasing in most of the Mediterranean countries and the range of the water stress is wide: from less than 10% in the Balkans to 100% and more in the Southern countries. In Libya, the water stress is over 800% (8 times the available resources). source_abstract The level of water stress: freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources is the ratio between total freshwater withdrawn by all major sectors and total renewable freshwater resources, after taking into account environmental water requirements. Main sectors, as defined by International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) standards, include agriculture; forestry and fishing; manufacturing; electricity industry; and services. This indicator is also known as water withdrawal intensity. Credits: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
