Terrestrial Wilderness (2009)

Terrestrial wilderness is derived from the Human Footprint (terrestrial) for years 1993 and 2009. Wilderness is defined as contiguous areas larger than 10,000 km sq where HFP values are less than 1. As such, the definition of wilderness doesn't preclude human presence in an area, only more significant impacts often resultant from increased human presence. Datasets present here include global wilderness areas in 1993, 2009, and a map of the wilderness areas present in 1993 than were lost by 2009.

source_abstract This layer shows a regionally representative map of wilderness following the well-established ‘Last of the Wild’ methodology. It identifies the 10% area with the lowest human pressure within each of Earth’s 60 biogeographic realms and identifies the ten largest contiguous areas within each realm, along with all contiguous areas > 10,000 km2.
