Rural population per district in 2016-17 (OCHA - 2016)

Rural population consists of the total population that lives in non-urban areas. Both population estimates and district boundaries were published by OCHA in line with the Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO) administrative boundaries. AGCHO and the Independent Directorate for Local Governance (IDLG) are recognized as the sole authoritative source for legal and technical issues related to the delimitation of administrative boundaries, composition, and division of the administrative units of Afghanistan. Population estimates were first originated by the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) and should be used in accordance with the "Estimated Population of Afghanistan 2016/17" report prepared by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan CSO. The 1.5 million nomadic population is NOT included in the province and district CSO population estimates (Based on census 1979).

source_abstract This geojson was created at UNEP-GRID by joining the .xls dataset on population estimates (created by Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - OCHA) to the spatial dataset for district boundaries (created by Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office - AGCHO). No changes were applied to the dataset besides the deletion of redundant attributes that were created by the merging process (province and district names and codes were present in both the GIS layer and the xls dataset). Both datasets were retrieved from https://data.humdata.org and distributed by OCHA. Information on: District boundaries spatial dataset: This spatial dataset was obtained by OCHA from AGCHO on 25 September 2012. It provides the delimitation and composition of the Afghanistan district boundaries and forms one of the Common Operational Datasets (COD) for the humanitarian community. It comprises 399 district boundaries, and is attributed with the AGCHO administrative codes and names (Dari and English). The file name for this dataset is afg_admbnd_adm2_pol. It has been provided to the humanitarian community in both shapefile and Keyhole Markup Language zipped (.kmz) format, along with along with Dari/Pashto names. The structure of the attribute table and field names have been modified to provide consistent notation across the CODs. The content of the AGCHO fields relating to names and codes have not been altered. A visual overlay inspection was undertaken to check the alignment between the national, province, and district boundaries. Field names were updated to enhance readability and consistencies across all administrative datasets. The district boundaries for Nahr-e-Saraj and Nawzad districts in Hilmand province contained fragments, which were detected through a “Multipart to Singlepart” ArcGIS routine. The small fragments were deleted and the boundaries (at the location of the fragments) were adjusted to match the alignment of the district/provincial boundary. In March 2017, a topology check on the dataset showed small gaps and overlaps between adjacent features. The topology was cleaned and rebuilt using the GRASS GIS tool v.clean, using the parameters: break, rmdupl, rmarea (1 sq. km.), rmsa. Terms of use: Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO) and the Independent Directorate for Local Governance (IDLG) are recognized as the sole authoritative source for legal and technical issues related to the delimitation of administrative boundaries, composition, and division of the administrative units of Afghanistan as per the following references: 1) Letter between AGCHO and the President's Office (dated 5 March 2007); and 2) Joint statement from IDLG and AGCHO (dated 26 March 2012). This dataset is strictly for humanitarian purposes. Population estimates dataset: The population estimates dataset was created on 15 August 2016 by the Information Management Unit (IMU) of OCHA. It is attributed with the AGCHO administrative codes and names (Dari and English). The population data was first originated by the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) and should be used in accordance with the "Estimated Population of Afghanistan 2016/17" report prepared by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan CSO. The 1.5 million nomadic population is NOT included in the province and district CSO population estimates (Based on census 1979). Age and gender disaggregated estimates are calculated based on proportion of population in each cohort in the 2011/2012 NRVA report. Since the Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO) is recognized as the sole authoritative source a for administrative boundaries, the population estimates have also been matched to the administrative names and codes of the AGCHO dataset. Terms of use: The population data was sourced from the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) and should be used in accordance with the "Estimated Population of Afghanistan 2016/17" report prepared by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan CSO.
