Summary: livelihood zones developed by FEWSnet and government of Afghanistan in 2011 Description livelihood zooming map developed by FEWSnet with the government of Afghanistan and development partners as part of the livelihod zooning plus exercise of 2011. Each zone is linked to a detailed livelihood profile, which describes the key livelihood activites in that zone (and when they take place throughout the year), the type and source of foods and income, the key shocks and hazards, and the level of acces / reliance on markets. A livelihood zone is an area within which people broadly practice the same type of activities to obtain food and income. The physical environment-climate, topography, access to water, soil fertility- is an important determinant of livelihood zones, as it influences the type of natural resources availabe to people (forest products, pastures etc.), the crops they can grow, or the type of livestock they can keep. Having said that, environmental and climatic factors do not single-handedly explain the variations in livelihood across Afghanistan: conflict, agricultural technology and techniques, transport, access to markets, poppy eradication campaigns, and proximity to borders all play a key role in determining how people obtain income and food.see : http://fews.net
