Sub-regional consultation for Lusophone African countries (Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and São Tomé and Principe) under the Rotterdam Convention on the social and environmental impact of pesticide use

Venue: Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), Palacio Conde de Penafiel, Rua Sao Mamede ao Caldas 21, LisbonBackground: The Rotterdam Convention, with its normative work related to international trade of hazardous pesticides, plays a key role for the achievement of food security and poverty reduction since it contributes to increased sustainable agricultural production and to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The consultation aims at boosting a sub-regional dialogue among five African Lusophone countries that share similar environmental and social concerns related to hazardous pesticides. Article 6 of the Convention is directly related to pesticides poisoning and vulnerable groups and this is the opportunity to present the Convention's experience on data collection and use it to take informed decision at national level. Moreover, it is an opportunity for reinforcing the Regional Strategy for Food and Nutrition Security (ESAN-CPLP) adopted by CPLP in 2012 and considered as milestone for the mandate and the work of FAO and strengthen fruitful collaboration within this framework.Working language: English and Portuguese
