Tuesday 30th November 2021 to Friday 3rd December 2021

The IWC started to consider the possible implications of climate change for cetaceans in the early 1990s and  has subsequently held four workshops in 1996, 2010, 2011 (focused on potential impacts of climate change on small cetaceans) and in 2014. A further workshop will be held in December 2021. The reports of all the previous workshops are available on the IWC website.

The 2021 workshop will review the latest information about the implications of climate change for all cetacean species, based on observed and predicted effects, and this will help to define and develop the role of the IWC in helping to address this issue.

Expected outcomes include

  • A fully referenced report from the workshop, which would include an overview of the latest findings in this field and consideration of how the IWC’s earlier recommendations on this topic are progressing; and
  • A series of recommendations for the Scientific Committee and the Commission to consider.

The workshop will also consider how the IWC should best interact with other international bodies that are also seeking to address climate change.
