In response to the urgent need for a more coherent and proactive policy agenda, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) joined forces at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to launch the Health and Environment Linkages Initiative (HELI).
