Vanishing Treasures: protecting endangered mountain species

The world’s climate is changing and mountains are on the frontline. As our planet continues to heat up, unique plants and animals struggle to survive in their ever-diminishing and changing mountain habitats. Local communities in mountain regions, who often live in the proximity of wildlife and are dependent on crops and livestock, are faced with great hardships caused by longer dry seasons and hot spells, and more unpredictable weather. As a result, local mountain communities and wildlife find themselves increasingly in conflict over natural resources and space to live in. The Vanishing Treasures programme, which is funded by the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, aims to generate maximum synergy between climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation by: - improving the adaptive capacity of mountain ecosystems while maintaining related ecosystem services; - protecting mountain flagship species who are key to ecosystem functioning; - promoting alternative livelihoods for local communities.
