The great apes have traditionally comprised six species—chimpanzee, bonobo, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, eastern gorilla and western lowland gorilla. In 2017 scientists identified a third orangutan species: the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), which is restricted to South Tapanuli, on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia, and is on the critically endangered species list.
