Food security hotspot areas due to snowmelt-related drought risk (WFP, UNEP & NEPA - 2016)

The threat posed by drought to the sustainability of the country’s irrigated farming is already acutely visible: in 2014, an estimated 31% of the total land normally available for irrigation was uncultivated—mostly due to lack of wa-ter in river and water-basin irrigation systems1. The irrigated areas around Ka-bul, which produce much of the country’s grain and vegetables, have been particularly affected, due to reduced spring snowmelt from the Hindu-Kush.
