Food security hotspot areas due to rainfall-related drought risk (WFP, UNEP & NEPA - 2016)

Over the past thirty years, the impact of increased rainfall-related drought risk on food security and livelihoods has been most severe in the north and center of the country. These are areas where the decline in spring rainfall (areas in blue on view "Localized drought due to lack of rainfall") overlaps with high livelihood vulnerability to lack of rainfall (i.e. livelihood zones dominated by rainfed agriculture or pastoralism, in dark yellow on view "Livelihood vulnerability to rainfall-related drought").

Source: The map comes from a report "Climate Change in Afghanistan: What does it Mean for Rural Livelihoods and Food Security?", which was produced jointly by the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). The map was produced based on the livelihood zones produced by FEWSNET.
